Ketoconazole 200 mg Tablets

M.O.A: Ketoconazole is a synthetic azole derivative having broad-spectrum antifungal activity. It works mainly by inhibiting the cytochrome P450 14 alpha-demethylase enzymes, an enzyme responsible for the synthesis of ergosterol (an vital component of the fungal cell membrane responsible for the regulation of fluidity and permeability).

Uses: Ketoconazole is used to treat both topical (on skin, hair and nails) as well as systemic (in the blood) fungal and yeast infections.

Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Ketoconazole is a weakly dibasic agent having maximum absorption in highly acidic medium. When administered orally with antacids or other agents (that decreases the stomach acidic content) the absorption of ketoconazole get reduced. Hence, it is recommended to take ketoconazole with acidic beverages like cola (helps to increase the absorption of the drug).

Distribution: Ketoconazole is very lipophilic drug (soluble in lipid, fats and oils) and can easily accumulate in fatty tissues, thus having a wide tissue distribution.

Dosage: Ketoconazole is a schedule H (prescription drug); hence, can be taken as per the prescribed by the doctor (physician).

Side effects: common side effects related to ketoconazole are headache, nausea, vomiting, redness of the skin, stomach pain, diarrhoea and abnormal liver function.
